Village Chief, 3 other Arrested for Illegal Fishing

A village chief was arrested together with 3 companions for illegal fishing early morning today.

Punong Barangay Ramil Gardon 37, of Calayuan, Matnog were among the group of four who were apprehended by the Municipal Agriculture’s Office, LGU Bantay Dagat and the Matnog Police.

Police Captain Jake Peralta, Officer-In-Charge of Matnog MPS said that they were joined by other enforcers such as RMU-5, 2nd SPMFC and LGU Bantay Dagat led by MAO Emmanuel De Guzman in a seaborne patrol operation that led to the arrest of the incumbent Barangay Chairman of BrgyCalayuanMatnogSorsogonRichard V. Garote, 27 years old, with live-in partner, fisherman and resident of Brgy. CalayuanMatnogSorsogonJoel M. Banagbanag, 46 years old, married, fisherman, and Ganny A. Paulito,41 years old, married, fisherman and both residents of BrgyAguinCapulSamar.during their seaborne patrol operation.

Said arrested persons were caught in the act while harvesting and gathering fish with the use of scuba diving suit equipped with breather tank and other fishing paraphernalia having violated RA 10654 amending RA 8550 (Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998).

Confiscated evidence from their possession are one (1) motorized banca, six (6) breather tanks, three (3) buoyancy compensator, three (3) sets of fins, three (3) improvised spears, three (3) improvised mask/goggles, one (1) improvised head flashlight, other scuba diving equipment and assorted fish.

The arrested persons were apprised of their constitutional rights in dialect known to and understood by them during the arrest and same were brought together with confiscated pieces of evidence to Matnog MPS for proper disposition. (SPPO-PCAD)
